There are not enough age-appropriate clinically proven therapies for children

In children, diseases, body size, stages of development and response to treatment are different than in adults, which is why treatment solutions that are especially suitable for them are needed.

Patients and their families play a key role in the design and implementation of studies

Through cooperation between families, patients and research groups, clinical trials and, through them, new forms of treatment are better suited for children and young people.

A networked operating model brings together experts and enhances research

The design and implementation of clinical trials in children requires an ethically and scientifically high level of specialist knowledge, on which the FINPEDMED network is based.

Children should have access to proven safe medicines, medical devices and therapies

FINPEDMED (the Finnish Investigators Network for Pediatric Medical Research), established in 2007, is a non-juridical joint venture of all Finnish university hospitals and pediatric clinics.

CLINICAL STUDIES FOR CHILDREN

In Finland, all medical studies in children and adolescents (<18 yrs.), must be processed and approved by regulatory authorities before the study is started. Medical research in humans is regulated by EU- and National legislation.

The investigators and experts of the FINPEDMED network are doctors who are familiar with the treatment and research of children’s diseases, as well as other experts in health care and various fields of science.

Companies

Most clinical trials and investigations are sponsored by Pharmaceutical companies, the Medical Device technology and Biotechnology companies. FINPEDMED’s services include finding investigators and trial sites for these studies.

Patients and families

Cooperation between families, patients and research groups will provide children and adolescents with better-suited clinical trials and, through them, new therapies.
